The Spirit of the Game
Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee
or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show
consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules. All players
should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating
courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how
competitive they may be.This is the spirit of the game of golf.golf_course

This section provides guidelines on the manner in which the game of
golf should be played. If they are followed, all players will gain
maximum enjoyment from the game. The overriding principle is that
consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times.

Golf etiquette means showing courtesy and consideration while you’re on the course. Keeping quiet while fellow golfers play or refraining from playing your shot until those ahead are out of distance is common sense but if you’re in any doubt about what you should be doing and when you should be doing it, always ask for guidance.

When you reach the putting green, don’t forget the shots your playing partners may have. Be careful not to walk on the line of anyone’s putt, and when you remove the flag from the hole, place it on an area of the green away from the hole that won’t be involved in play.

When you’ve finished playing a hole and have replaced the flag, don’t wait around next to the green adding up your score. Proceed straight to the next tee and do it there instead.

Slow play is the bane of most golfer’s lives. It is frustrating, irritating and usually unnecessary. So maintain a good pace to your round and try not to delay. Spend no longer than five minutes looking for a lost ball – any longer and you’ll not only be breaking the rules but you’ll also incur the wrath of the players behind you.

If you’re playing in a three ball or four ball you’re obliged to allow any two-player groups to “play through.” This means letting them go ahead of you.

There’s nothing more irritating than finding a green that is riddled with pitch marks or hitting a great drive down the middle of the fairway only to ind that your ball has landed in a divot hole. Some rounds you’ll find that you cause damage almost every time you play a shot. Be considerate of other players by taking time to repair your pitch marks and divots properly.

When the greens are soft, its inevitable that your ball will leave a mark on the putting surface. Always use a pitch-mark repairer or a tee. Never try to flatten the mark with a club or your shoe.

Repairing a Pitch Mark

Insert your pitch-mark tool to the back of the ball mark and pull the turf up and toward the center of the damage, before repeating the action on all sides of the mark. When you’ve made your way around the pitch mark, gently tap your putter over the affected area, flattening the surface. If you have time, repair any other pitch marks you may see as well.

Replacing a Divot

It’s a common misconception among beginners that taking a divot when hit the ball is a bad thing. It’s not. A correctly played approach shot will often produce a divot, so don’t be afraid to take one – just remember to replace it. When you make a divot, simply walk up to where the tuft of grass has landed and pick it up, before returning to where you hit your shot. Place it in the exact spot it came from and then step on the grass you’ve replaced until the playing surface is smooth once more.
